We are proud to announce that NAMI Long Beach Area has been awarded a $60,000 grant from Dignity Health to deliver mental health awareness training for adults working with at-risk youth during
2020. The grant was awarded as part of Dignity Health's Cultural Trauma and Mental Health Resiliency Project; several other NAMI affiliates in LA County are also grant
recipients.
Under the program, NAMI Long Beach is providing the following three courses to adults who regularly interact with young people, particularly young people of color.
-
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA): MHFA is a nationally recognized evidence-based course that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental
distress. For more information on MHFA, please visit the national website MentalHealthFirstAid.org
-
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA): Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors,
health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental
Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. You can learn even more about YMHFA by going to the national website at MentalHealthFirstAid.org
-
Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR):Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.Just as people trained in CPR and the
Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone
to help. NAMI Long Beach will provide classes on request to adults, faculty, administrators, parents and other leaders at schools, youth and community organizations.
If you would like to request a training for your local school or organization, please submit a request with details of your organization to nami@namilongbeach.org (maximum of 30 students per class)
In addition, NAMI Long Beach will begin offering monthly trainings open to the public in late February. More details will be posted soon.
